BACKGROUND

In 2017 we learned that most local Colombians believe that the French press is the best way to brew coffee. I learned this the hard way when a local tossed my AeroPress into a field of coffee plants. The French press is the most common brewing method found at home due to its simplicity. However, some recent scientific/news reports sway the health sector towards filtered coffee like the Chemex and V60. The paper filter in these methods remove some of the bean particles from the brew. For French Press, make sure you take the coffee out of the press right after brewing. It only takes about four minutes to brew.

As a general measurement rule use 70-75 grams of coffee to 1 liter/1000grams of water depending on how strong you like your coffee. Our coffee bag indicates 30grams of coffee to 350 grams of water for smaller servings. Don’t grind super course. Grind at a medium.

STEP 1

Bring 200 grams of water to a boil at a temperature of about 200°F. Use 16-18 grams of coffee depending on how strong you like your coffee.

STEP 2

Insert the paper filter in the detachable cap on the AeroPress. Wash the paper while it is in the cap with hot water. Then put together the rest of the AeroPress device making sure that it is dry, or it will not seal correctly.

STEP 3

Place the AeroPress on a scale. The numbers should face down towards the scale.

Carefully add the ground into the device, but do not get the grounds in the ring gutter on the AeroPress.

STEP 4

Add your ground coffee. Be careful not to spill any grounds into the ring-shaped gutter at the top of the AeroPress.

STEP 5

Start the time when you’re adding the initial water for the bloom phase. Again, use twice the amount of water as the ground weight. Let the bloom sit for about 30 seconds. Stir with a chopstick or thin wooden utensil if the grinds don’t appear fully wet in the bloom phase.

STEP 6

After the bloom uses the rest of the hot water in the kettle. Let them sit for a minute and then stir 10 times.

STEP 7

Put the cap on the device making sure it is secure. Then flip the entire unit over slowly. Start pushing down on the unit slowly after you put it over your brewing device. You know when your coffee is ready when you hear a hissing sound. This means that you used all the water in the chamber.
